RWI is the school’s synthetic phonics programme.

This is where the children are taught to recognise the letters and their sounds as well as how letters are combined (synthesised) to produce different sounds e.g. ‘ph’ = ‘f’.

This is the first stage of children learning to read and write and needs to be undertaken thoroughly and regularly.

Janvrin School was one of the pioneering schools for this scheme in Jersey and has seen great success in children’s reading and writing developments.

The children are initially assessed and then grouped according to the knowledge of individual sounds. In their groups, they are taught every day for 1 hour at a level that best suits their capabilities and knowledge.

Each child is re-assessed every half term and re-grouped as appropriate.

Children are largely expected to finish the scheme by the end of Year 2.
